HELLO CAN YA HEAR ME?

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE TALKING TO IN YOUR SECOND LIFE?

In 2007 Linden Labs introduced Voice Software for use in Second Life. From memory what I remember them saying was that it was a great new way to interact with your friends in sl. For many it phased out the one handed typing skill they had become so dexterous at. (I’m sure you all know what I mean)

Over the last two years it has had a lot of uses in various situations such as alt busting, but the main use has to be voice verification for gender clarification. The fact of the matter is that 70% of all sl females are actually men, so it’s no surprise that lots of guys have and will continue to make the girls voice verify during the earlier dating rituals. It’s not only the guys though. Lots of women in rl have chosen to be men in sl and while some are very open about this, there are lots who aren’t, and do it purely to scam people out of pitiful amounts of money.

Lots of people have ways round this voice thing though. Saying you have no headset only works for 2 days Max, then the other party will start to become suspicious. While investigating this issue I have heard a lot of people just lie and just say they are deaf in rl, although this method has been proved unreliable because you really need to be deaf forever and not suddenly be able to hear when the mood suits you.

Modern technology is always evolving. There is always going to be a way to con people, no matter what you are doing and I found just the thing to do it. It’s not like us to show people tricks to use to con people but my research has shown that a lot of people are using it anyway, so take this article as a warning.
Voice changing software such as MorphVoxPro by Screaming Bee, is already being used on the grid. Want to sound like a woman/man? Well this is what you need to get and all for $40. It can be used in Second Life, various other online games and guess what, even Skype!

It was first used in combat games so that men or women, who wanted to sound more manly or evil, could do so by talking through the software and their voice would sound completely different during game play. Kind of like lots of people are doing in sl at the moment, only for a different type of game play (I’m sure you all know what I mean, again)

The questions everyone will be asking are, is there a way to tell the difference? Can you tell if someone is using voice changing software to con you?

No, not really. I spoke to some people about this and they say it’s just a matter of giving up your personal telephone number, but really would you be bothered? They have went to the trouble of installing voice changing software so they would probably drag some woman/man from the street to talk to you. Some people who have found out they have been conned by this method did say that the person sounded drunk or a bit out of it, so if you have met anyone or heard anyone recently who you thought sounded like this, this might just be the reason.
If you think you are being conned or have been conned in this way, id love to hear all about it, preferably on voice.
