For a lot of new residents in second life this last week’s unstable grid activity will have been very unsettling and annoying. For all of us who have been here a while, we remember a time when those problems you all thought terrible where ten times worse.
Everyone crashed at the weekend-at the same time. Grid wide panic happened with a lot of people I know, especially new ones, thought they were being escorted on a little holiday to ban city.
After the initial crash some of us were able to log back in, yet 6000 had crashed and many had still not got back up and running. I found myself stuck at one of the help info hubs. Not so many were noobs, but lots of them were totally dumb as f***. I thanked god that Sl Voice was also down so I wouldn’t have to sit and listen to the arguing that usually goes on at these places.
I was stuck wearing the previous night’s attire, with no money, with the people who needed more help than a help infohub could ever give. I think I said “please stop trying to touch me” at least 50 times and I was set on fire 7 times by a guy who thought he was hilarious and who then tried to bust a move on me.Even though some of you will feel my pain, it seems I was one of the lucky ones. Some of the tales I have heard, are far worse than my experience.
It’s never fun to have missing inventory, but to a have a missing shape and skin or to see ‘not found in database’ when you try to wear your shape or skin, will never make anyone want to get the party poppers out. Yes, some of our newer residents met Ruthy this weekend for the first time ever. It actually cracked me up to think that somewhere on the grid someone was screaming at being ruthed and being left like this for 24hrs until LL found their stuff.
I still have the snaps of Rawly in only a pair of work boots and a yellow hard hat covering his bits. He had no inventory for a day or two way back in early 2007 when this type of grid mayhem was the norm. However they are in private memories album and will stay there for now.
A lot of people who still couldn’t log in or the ones who got fed up trying to do anything, logged out and some hopped over to the Xstreet(formally known to all us oldies as Slexchange) for a spot of retail therapy. You would think during all the grid chaos and maintenance work being carried out on the grid that LL, since they now own X-Street, would have disabled all transactions here. Oh No they didn’t. So all those people who blissfully shopped the 'down time' away might aswell have just set fire to their wallets in their rl garden.
You have all heard of log out lag. Well what I heard takes lag to a whole other lag-erific level. Imagine the feeling you would get when you try to log in only to find you can’t because you are already logged in. It’s the stuff nightmares are made of and immediately you think your second life account had been infiltrated. What do you do?
Well you call your friend in rl, who is also in sl and they confirm that you are infact online. Next you call LL and you get put on hold for like 2 hrs. It is never a good move to try and phone LL during a grid crisis but I suppose you just don’t think when you are assuming someone is wooting it up in a zyngo hall or is in a Stiletto Moody store with your credit card.
Eventually someone answers and tells you it’s ok because it’s just SL being nuts and to be patient. They will also push all your ten buttons at once by asking if you have submitted a ticket. That one never fails to push all mines.
For anyone who experiences this phenomenon in the future, simply log into your alt account and IM yourself. (Anyone who says they don’t have an alt account is a liar) This will kick you offline and save you being locked out of SL for the next 3 days, just like the person I spoke to.
I have heard there is to be more crazy grid nights ahead of us, so anyone who is new don’t panic and just go with the flow. I suppose when you think about what could have happened to other people, being stuck with crazy people, getting set on fire with no money wasn’t so bad after all.
