AUSTRALIA SET TO BAN SECOND LIFE????
As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on June 25th 2009, Australia's Minister for Censorship is rumoured to ban the playing of online adult games, including Second Life.
The Australian government has already banned games such as Fallout 3 and continues to ban games which show images of violence or sexual content. For a while this policy only seemed to stretch to the selling of games from stores but now it seems it will reach the downloadable gaming market.
Australia is the only developed country without an R18+ rating on games, which means that if a game doesn’t meet the MA15+ standard, they are simply banned by the classification board, unless they are modified and offending content removed.
Australians, who are adults, who want to have access to adult games such as Second life will not be able to do so. The date for ban hasn’t been announced yet and will be enforced by web filtering to stop people from getting to play the games with RC (Refused Classification) by the ACMA.
In order for Australian gamers to play games such as Second Life they would have to be awarded an ACMA rating or all content would be blocked.
At the moment know one knows what is to happen with this situation or whether popular games like SL and WOW will bypass this.
